Electra introduces smart charging: now cheaper than charging at home

Brussels, May 19, 2026 - Electra, the European specialist in ultra-fast charging, is disrupting the Belgian EV market by launching an automated off-peak discount across its busiest stations in Belgium. Starting today, EV drivers can benefit from rates as low as €0.34/kWh during off-peak hours - a price point that is now lower than the average cost of charging at home in Belgium.
As the Belgian EV market enters a phase of mass adoption, the focus is shifting from infrastructure availability to economic accessibility. With the introduction of peak and off-peak pricing at its busiest stations, Electra is the first major pure player CPO in Belgium to align public fast charging costs with the night rate logic familiar to millions of Belgian households, as well as the capacity tariff in Flanders.
Ending the "lack of driveway penalty"
For Belgians who do not have access to a private driveway or a home charger, the cost of public charging has long been a barrier. By lowering the off-peak rate to €0.34/kWh (with the Electra+ Smart subscription, applicable at the busiest Electra stations), Electra effectively removes this "penalty."
"At €0.34/kWh, we are offering the lowest ultra-fast charging rate on the market, cheaper than the average domestic electricity rate in Belgium," says Louis-Charles Mosseray, General Manager of Electra BeNeLux. "This is our concrete response to the purchasing power challenge, ensuring that electric mobility is no longer a luxury reserved for those with a home charger."
Smart charging: transparency first and grid-friendly
The new pricing model is designed to optimize station occupancy and relieve pressure on the Belgian power grid. By offering significantly lower rates during less busy time slots at Electra’s busiest stations, Electra encourages drivers to shift their sessions, reducing congestion during peak hours, and improving user satisfaction.
How it works in practice:
- Transparency first: All variable prices are displayed in real-time in the Electra app before the session begins.
- Fixed during session: Once a driver plugs in, the rate is locked for the entire duration of the session, regardless of time transitions.
- Smart choice: Drivers can easily spot less congested time slots or nearby stations with lower demand to maximize their savings.
Two new subscriptions: simpler and even more affordable
To accompany this shift, Electra is replacing its previous "Start" and "Boost" plans with two improved, lower-cost subscriptions:
- Electra+ Essential (€1.99/month): Guarantees a 10-cent reduction per kWh at any time of day.
- Electra+ Smart (€4.99/month): Guarantees a 20-cent reduction per kWh at any time. This replaces the former Boost plan (€9.99) at half the price, representing an immediate saving of €60 per year on subscription fees alone.
Current "Start" and "Boost" subscribers can remain on their existing plans or switch to the new, more advantageous plans at any time via the app.
Travel across Europe with ChargeLeague
Electra+ Smart subscribers also benefit from preferential rates across Europe through ChargeLeague, the alliance of charging operators initiated by Electra. ChargeLeague brings together Europe’s four most-used fast-charging networks: Electra, IONITY, Fastned and Atlante.
Together, they represent more than 11,000 charge points across the continent. While any Electra user can already launch a charge on a ChargeLeague station directly from the Electra app with no extra registration. Electra+ Smart members enjoy guaranteed preferential rates on all partner networks: €0.59/kWh in Belgium, €0.49/kWh in France, €0.54/kWh in Spain, and €0.64/kWh in Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland and Austria.
Combined with the new dynamic off-peak pricing in Belgium, Electra+ Smart now covers every charging need: from the lowest local rate at €0.34/kWh during off-peak hours, to a transparent and affordable experience across Europe via ChargeLeague.
